Social Glue
…taking individual parts and binding them into a larger whole,
a fabric of humanity.

Paper, it’s everywhere. Why do I save it—every piece? I love the
freedom of recontextualizing scrap paper into something larger.
Old printer paper in stacks, envelopes in bags, piled posters in
the corner—torn and cut with glue and water and transformed
into a larger whole. Sometimes part of an important message gets obscured by another. But lost behind layers of paper and meaning, the figure still dominates.
My work has always been about humanity and people. Usually
I’ve done ink drawings with watercolor or acrylic. After a thousand quick studies of labored voyeurism and hundreds of distorted pen drawings that usually barely resemble the sitter, I tossed the pen for this exhibition. All that’s left is the glue, splattered ink, acrylic, thread and paper. Thousands of pieces of paper flutter through each day—receipt in a pocket, bank statement, scratched-out grocery list or hand-
drawn protest sign. Each scrap comes with a history no matter how mundane and speaks to the larger whole that we matter. We are here. We are even demanding freedom from being drawn correctly.
